The Long Review:
Admittedly, we had some reservations about seeing "Exit Wounds." We heard and read nothing but really, really bad stuff about the film. But surprisingly, watching it wasn't that painful. It was pretty entertaining and interesting, actually. Seriously. "Exit Wounds" tells the story of Orin Boyd (Steven Seagal), a notorious cop known for his uncontrollable rage and incurable stubbornness. When he messes up (translation: plays hero) one too many times, he is transferred to a new precinct, where he smells a bad stink. No, not that. As in a hierarchy of corruption involving cops, crime, and heroine. Oooooh. Luscious. And since this is a Steven Seagal flick, you know that although the guy can't act more than he can shed those extra pounds, he sure can put on a great martial arts display.
And that's what he does. Seagal, with his husky Godfather wannabe croak, demonstrates some fantastic moves, thanks to some great choreography. We're not kidding. He still has it. Looks can be deceiving. And whatshisface, DMX, is actually pretty decent. Considering he had a lead role, it is safe to say that he must have felt the pressure to perform. No. Not that kind of performing. We mean acting. We know that this isn't saying much but DMX delivers a way better performance in this movie than he did in "Romeo Must Die." And that Tom Arnold…he is pretty funny! He is the perfect pick for the role of a an arrogant and sleazy (but surprisingly likeable) TV show host. Gee. What a big stretch for this guy, huh?
As for the plot of this film, once again, brace yourself for a surprise. It is actually pretty decent! It has twists and turns that you just don't expect. Basically, it keeps you guessing right till the end. Who's the bad guy? Who's the good guy? Who's the idiot who convinced Seagal that having a long, sleek ponytail was still cool? The movie also boasts of some pretty engaging (and graphic) chase scenes. People who are into that stuff are in for a treat.
This is, of course, not to say that "Exit Wounds" has no faults. Nuh-uh. It contains some pretty cheesy dialogue at times…the lactose intolerant better watch out. Things work out just a bit too well. People show up or things blow up always just at the nick of time. As in c'mon, now. Can that really happen?
But we guess that's a price to pay for watching an action-packed film. It also helps that we had absolutely no expectations going into the movie. So overall, it's a pretty okay movie. We weren't bleeding when we walked out of the theatre, as the title suggests. It was a pretty painless experience. Chances are, if you're out to be entertained, you'll like it…unless you're a corrupt cop and it hits too close to home! Hee-hee!
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- Steven Seagal, aka "Master Take Shigemichi," is the first foreigner ever to own and run an Aikido dojo in Japan. 'Wonder if he is also the first to think having a greasy ponytail is cool??
- DMX sure loves dogs. He has a tattoo on his back that says "ONE LOVE BOOMER" in honour of his dog that was killed by a motorist. Hmmm…We can't decide if he's sentimental or just plain whack.
