Pickup Line: A Movie To End All Blonde Jokes!
Quickie: When a perky, ditzy and very blonde Sorority President gets dumped by her Harvard Law-bound preppy of a boyfriend, she applies and gets in to Harvard Law to prove that she's worthy of his prestigious name. See! Blondes do have more fun!
The Long Review:
In the tradition of the classic "Clueless", "Legally Blonde" tells the tale of a ditzy, over-privileged, yet kind-hearted blonde who goes on some gargantuan mission to change her life or the world...or something like that. Like, whatever. In "Legally Blonde", we witness the story of Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), a girl who has everything: a Sorority Presidency, a 4.0 in Fashion Design, perfect nails and hair, cosmetically blessed friends, and most of all, a boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis), who makes the Ken doll look like a retired Teletubby...that is, until Mr. Perfect (or so she thought) dumps her on the grounds that she's "too blonde" for his future career as a politician and for his prestigious family. After gorging on chocolate and indulging in soap operas, Elle comes up with a brilliant plan to win her man back: she'll get into Harvard Law and prove to Warner that she's the perfect girl for him. And get into Harvard she does, outrageous wardrobe and yappy dog and all.
"Legally Blonde" is a delightfully funny comedy, thanks to Reese Witherspoon's flexibility as an actress and strong screen presence. This girl knows how to pick her roles and perfect them. She IS Elle Woods. The movie also has an infectious dialogue that can make even the most cynical of people erupt into uncontrollable giggles. Serious. And you know what? This film actually has a decent story. It's not all hair and make-up, as most teen flicks tend to be. Granted, Miss Witherspoon goes through some 60 wardrobe changes and 40 hairstyles throughout the movie but hey, it's all part of the masterplan! A strong supporting cast also helps makes "Legally Blonde" a worthwhile watch. One complaint, though? The movie is somewhat slow in its development. Its pace could use a little Tae-Bo kick in the fanny.
And what does Roger Ebert think? "I smiled a lot during the movie, laughed a few times, was amused by the logic of the court case. 'Legally Blonde' is not a great movie (not comparable with 'Clueless,' which it obviously wants to remind us of, or Witherspoon's own wonderful 'Election'). But Witherspoon is a star, and the movie doesn't overstay its welcome. To which we say, "Ugh! Not comparable to 'Clueless'? As if!"
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- Reese Witherspoon left acting for a couple of years to raise her baby with actor Ryan Philippe! Looking at her body in this movie, you wouldn't think she's already borne a child!
- Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair were in another movie together, "Cruel Intentions". How different their characters were in that movie from the ones they play in "Legally Blonde"! And is it just us or is Selma Blair looking kinda like a stick?! Someone give her a sandwich, quick!
