The Long Review:
If you thought the previews for "Say It Isn't So" were shady, just wait till you see the movie in its entirety! Half of the stuff you see on screen, you wouldn't believe you're seeing. But then again, what can you expect from the people who brought us "There's Something About Mary"? "Say It Isn't So" tells the story of Gilly Noble (Chris Klein), a typical nice, animal-lovin' guy living in the hick town of Shelbyville, Indiana. His life takes a turn for the better (or so he thinks) when he hooks up with the town's sexiest hairdresser, Jo Wingfield (Heather Graham). All's fine and dandy…until they find out that they're brother and sister! So all hell breaks loose and what follows is one gross mishap after another as Gilly tries to mend his broken heart.
In a word, this movie is gross. Disgusting. Crass. Tasteless. Euuuuwwww. But then again, like we said, what can you expect from the Farrelly brothers? We found ourselves experiencing delayed reactions to the "jokes" put before us just because we couldn't believe what we were actually seeing! From brown jokes to green, yellow to red, this movie has it all! If there's such a thing as an overdose on grossness and political incorrectness, this movie will give you one. Roger Ebert was less than pleased with this film as well. When talking about its screenplayh writers, he says, "They include obligatory elements such as physical handicaps, sexual miscalculations, intestinal difficulties and weird things done to animals, but few of the gags really work. They know the words but not the music." Ouch. Better luck next time, boys! Oh, dang. Is there going to be a next time??
Okay, okay, we have to give props to the actors who were able to keep a straight face during filming. And who were able to pull off the stunts dictated by the script. Chris Klein pulls off his role as unsuspecting, unassuming, unrelenting lovesick puppy. Heather Graham is her usual perky, ditzy self. And Sally Field. Oh, man, Sally Field. It's so sad that she's sunk this low. To accept the degrading role she plays in this movie is a sign that this acting icon is desperate. Either that or she really enjoys looking like a hag and playing a skank.
And you know what? Surprisingly, amidst all the disgusting antics, the story actually isn't half-bad. We like how everything is tied together, especially in the end. The plot comes full circle…and for a movie of this caliber, that's saying a lot. And if there's virtue to be found in simply not letting up, this movie is beyond virtuous…it's saintly. Overall, "Say It Isn't So" is a comedy for those who appreciate shocking and vomit-inducing humour. If you liked "There
Something About Mary," you'll love this one. It's another work of the Farrelly brothers you may find worth the hurl…er…wait.
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- You may remember Chris Klein as a horny teenager in the (way funnier) comedy "American Pie." Hmmm…looks like Mr. Klein has a penchant for raunchy movies!
