Quickie: An ogre begrudgingly goes on a quest to rescue a princess locked in a tower to reclaim his territory. Geez. You'd think something this ugly would be thankful for the excuse to meet a beautiful lady!
The Long Review:
"Shrek" is one of the best movies we've seen all year. It's funny, clever, touching…and most of all, entertaining. It tells the amusing story of Shrek (Mike Myers), an ogre mocked and feared by all those who encounter him. Things begin to change for him when the kingdom's ruler, Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), orders all fairy tale creatures (We're talkin' the seven dwarves, Pinocchio, and them) to be banished from the kingdom and to be relocated to Shrek's pride and joy, his swamp. To get his land back, Shrek agrees to go on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), who is locked away in a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon, so that shorty Lord Farquaad could fulfill his manly fantasies and marry her.
"Shrek" is a welcome surprise in that it is wickedly witty and deliciously naughty. We found ourselves dropping our jaws in shock several times because of the um…adult nature of some of the jokes. We guess that explains the PG rating, huh? We don't think the little kiddies detected the sexual innuendos but we sure did! Hmmm…Or could it be that we're just dirty-minded? Whatever. We don't care. All we care about is the good laughs that we got from this movie. We swear, some of the scenes, although unnecessary, even aimless, are just plain hilarious. We guarantee you'll still be laughing way after these scenes have passed!
This movie also boasts of a great plot and dialogue. You'll get a taste of drama, suspense, mystery, and yes, romance. And is the dialogue ever clever! You'll find yourself forgetting that those are not real people you're watching onscreen…you're just hearing the voices of real people. But the dialogue is just so damn candid and punchy, the animated creatures begin to look like actual characters. Of course, the realness of the characters is also largely due to the superb animation. It's perfect, just perfect!
"Shrek" is definitely a must-see. If you're planning on seeing just one movie this summer, this is it. Serious. You won't regret it. Ebert liked it, too: ""Shrek" is jolly and wicked, filled with sly in-jokes and yet somehow possessing a heart." See? Once watch this movie, you'll never look at a Disney movie the same way again!
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- Want an indication of how long this movie took to make? How about this: Chris Farley was supposed to do the voice of Shrek. 'Nuff said.
- Eddie Murphy, who does the voice of Donkey, is used to um..relating to animals. You might have seen him in "Dr. Dolittle." No? Well, have no fear. You'll get to see him in action when "Dr. Dolittle 2", coming this June.
