Quickie: An undercover cup joins the wild ring of street racing to investigate, and hopefully solve, the mystery behind a series of violent (and expensive) highway truck hijackings. Gee…do all cops have this much fun on the job?!
The Long Review:
"The Fast and the Furious" promises fast cars and furious people…and that's exactly what you get. Nothing more, nothing less. Forget an intelligent plot, engaging dialogue, or even plain logic for that matter. This no-brainer thriller tells the story of a bleach blond named Brian (Paul Walker), an undercover cop who breaks into the wild world of street racing to solve the mystery behind a series of multimillion highway truck hijackings. While in disguise, all covered with grease and grime, he befriends Toretto (Vin Diesel), the god of street racing, and becomes romantically involved with Toretto's sexy, hairy sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster). Basically, throughout the movie, the audience has a love affair with a smorgasbord of cars and watches Brian's comic struggle between his relationships with Toretto and Mia and his duty as a cop.
Did we like the cars? Oh, yeah. Did we like the cool action sequences? Yeah, sure. Did we like Vin Diesel? Yee-hah! This guy rocks! Alas, our admiration ends there. This movie is all fury and no substance. The story is convoluted, lacking in logic and proper closure. And the dialogue. Oh, the dialogue! May the movie gods have mercy on your innocent, unassuming ears! And you know what? The awing race and crash scenes, although jaw-dropping, are simply impossible, according to the incontestable laws of physics. But hey, they were neat to watch. And the acting. Huh?! What acting? Save for Vin Diesel and perpetually pissed off Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Vin Diesel's girlfriend, the cast of this movie do nothing more than shift gears and fake an intense look. Sorry, Paul Walker. Maybe you should stick to your preppy, pretty boy roles.
And what does the all-knowing Roger Ebert have to say? "One of the nice things about the movie is the way it tells a story and explains its characters. It's a refreshing change from such no-plot, all-action movies as 'Gone in 60 Seconds'." Say what?! We think the old guy's been sniffing a little nitrous oxide! "The Fast and the Furious" is a laughable movie better left seen on video. If you really want to see some nice cars, do it for free at your local auto mall.
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- This movie is loosely based on an article that appeared on "Vibe" magazine. That sure explains a whole lot.
- Michelle Rodriguez of "Girlfight" fame gets to practice her right hook in this movie. 'Goes to show that the gal has acquired some valuable skills, aside from pouting and scowling.
- During interviews, Paul Walker has acknowledged that in some people's eyes, he was outshown by Vin Diesel in this movie. To which we say, "Paul Walker who?"
