Pickup Line: A Royal Treat!
Quickie: A social outcast finds her life turned upside-down when she learns that she's a princess. So you better be nice to that geek beside you…she just may be part of royalty!
The Long Review:
It's hard not to like "The Princess Diaires". It's a sweet, unassuming movie that just want to make the audience smile and feel good. Awwww… Starring Anne Hathway as Mia, it tells the story of a social outcast whose whole life turns upside down when her European grandmother pays an unexpected visit and breaks the royal news to her: that she's the Princess of Genovia. What follows is a touching and delightfully entertaining look at Mia's journey towards living up to her role and discovering her true self. Okay, if this gets any mushier, you just may hurl, so we're going to stop now.
"The Princess Diaries" has a simple plot, yes, but would you really see this movie to sharpen you brain? Nuh-uh. 'Didn't think so. In place of a complex story filled with suspense and red herrings, this movie has a lot of charm, humour, wit…and that child-like innocence so characteristic of Disney movies. "The Princess Diaries" can also add another feather to its cap: it empowers teenage girls (and guys, if you may) during the oh-so-difficult time we call teenagehood, otherwise known as the Dark Ages. And, it portrays teens to be quite sassy and savvy…some of them a bit on the catty side but headstrong, nonetheless. We've all had enough of braindead teens, I'm sure. Oh, and hey, this movie also stars Julie Andrews. What more can you ask for??
And what did Roger Ebert think of it? Apparently, not much. "Haven't I seen this movie before? "The Princess Diaries" is a march through the swamp of recycled ugly duckling stories, with occasional pauses in the marsh of sitcom cliches and the bog of Idiot Plots. Whoops. 'Guess it takes more than a cute girl with a crown to please the King of Critique.
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- Hah! We caught Roger Ebert in the wrong! In his review slamming "The Princess Diaries", he claims that Anne Hathaway, who plays Princess Mia, is almost 21 years old. We don't know where he got that fact but according to our research, Miss Hathaway is but a mere 18 years old.
- Garry Marshall, the director of "The Princess Diaries", also directed "Pretty Woman". Gee...see any similarities?
