Quickie: A master thief and cunning janitor team up to pull off a multi-million dollar heist. Hey, if Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie could get together, these two could pair up...okay??

The Long Review:

Put together Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, and Edward Norton, and it's very difficult not to produce a quality movie. That's exactly what "The Score" is. This gritting film tells the story of Nick Wells (Robert DeNiro), a master thief who also doubles as a jazz club owner (now you know how he go the money to own it). When a friend, Max (Marlon Brando) tells him about a priceless antique scepter contained in the Montreal Customs House, and the gargantuan pay-off this heist will bring, Nick decides, against his golden rule to not rob his own hometown, Montreal, to go for the gusto. To pull off the heist, he needs to collaborate with a smooth conman named Jack (Edward Nurton), who also doubles as something else: a janitor at the Customs House named Brian who has a very apparent brain/speech impediment…and who knows every inch of the Customs House. Together, these two plot and scheme to steal the scepter.

"The Score" is one sophisticated, complex heist story. The detailed lead-in to the climax, although somewhat slow, allows for total character and plot development. Every single word uttered and movement performed is calculated to a tee…each one a significant piece of the big puzzle. So you better pay attention or you're sure to miss something! And the acting. Wow. It's pretty damn good. How can you expect anything less?? You forget that the actors are mere actors, they play their parts so well. If you're in the mood for a clever, intricate plot interlaced with intrigue and yes, even humour, this movie is for you. It really goes to show you that you don't need much booty-shakin', gun-firin', and blood-sheddin' to make a kick-ass movie! Not to say that "The Score" doesn't have its share of juicy stuff…it's just a different kind of juicy, that's all. Like "Whoa, that' smart!" kinda juicy. Oh, you'll see what we mean when you go see it!

Roger Ebert liked, it, too: "'The Score' is the best pure heist movie in recent years. It assembles three generations of great American actors and puts them to work on a break-in of awesome complexity, and has the patience to build real suspense instead of trying to substitute cheap thrills." See, see?

Did you know?

  • Throughout the filming of this movie, Marlon Brando kept doing something that made his co-starts just a teeny bit irate: showing up on the set naked. Yup, he was parading his whale of a body on the set in all its butt-naked glory. Speculators say it could have been his way of forcing the crew to film him waist up to try to hide his sagging body. We say the old man's cracked.
  • Edward Norton got paid $6.5 million to make this movie…not including the 4% of the initial box-office take he's going to bring home. Think that's big? Just check out how much Robert DeNiro made…
  • …$15 million! Waaah!
