Pickup Line: Love At First Sight!
Quickie: A wedding planer/control freak finds her world turned upside down when Mr. Right turns out to be Mr. Totally Wrong…He's the groom for a wedding she's planning!
The Long Review:
If you don't plan on getting married…ever, seeing "The Wedding Planner" just might change your mind. Watching the beautiful Jennifer Lopez envision, plan, and execute lavish weddings may get you trekking down the aisle, if not only to be the star of a fairy tale marriage ceremony. In "The Wedding Planner," Jennifer Lopez stars as Mary Fiore, wedding planner extraordinaire, obsessive control freak, and loser at love. Her luck changes (or perhaps it doesn't) when a hunky doctor, Steve Edison (Matthew McConaughey) saves her life when she is almost run over dead by a mobile dumpster. *Sigh 'Can't think of a more romantic meeting…Can you? Anyway, just as Mary thinks she's met THE ONE and she can finally plan her own wedding, it turns out that Dr. Steve is the groom of the high-profile wedding she's coordinating. Let the wedding bells ring!
"The Wedding Planner" falls in the same category as "My Best Friend's Wedding." Light, romantic, cute, funny…and sprinkled with good-looking people. Let's see…We got Jennifer Lopez. There's Matthew McConaughey. Oh, yeah. And there's Bridgette Wilson-Sampras. And the plot, although not exactly brain exercise, is both entertaining and touching. Undoubtedly, you'll hear outbursts of "Awwwwws" and "Aaaaaahs" from the audience as women (or even men) get swept away by the romantic and oh-so-cutesie scenes they'll see on screen. And surprisingly, the story isn't all that predictable. There are a couple of surprising twists and turns that add a bit of spice to this otherwise sugary flick.
Jennifer Lopez handles the role of control-freak-in-longing quite well. She's charming, funny, and yes, beautiful. Matthew McConaughey is the ultimate suave, preppy groom…you just might feel like marrying him. And Bridgette Wilson-Sampras is the ultimate poised, pretty, perfect fiancée, Fran Donolly who has no clue that there's a hidden passion between her groom and wedding planner.
Overall, "The Wedding Planner" is a feel-good romantic comedy that would serve well on a first date. Alas, Roger Ebert doesn't share our sentiments, proclaiming that this "movie cannot abide common sense, and recycles decades of cliches about the wrong people getting married and the right ones making stupid decisions. Hmmm…Someone's hard and bitter. Maybe his own wedding really sucked. 'Cuz he didn't hire a wedding planner.
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- We have a teeny-weeny inkling that the fashion designers for "The Wedding Planner" have a blue fetish. There was a whole lotta blue worn by the cast. Go see for yourself.
- Pete Sampras' bride, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, won the Miss Teen USA title in 1990. In "The Wedding Planner," she shows that she's al grown up!
- It's amazing Jennifer Lopez found the time to make a movie. Between her singing career and standing by her man, Sean "Puffy" Combs, she's got a lot on her butt...er...plate.
