Pickup Line: A Never-Ending VideoGame
Quickie: Lara Croft goes on an adventure from end of the earth to another to locate the two pieces that make up the Triangle of Light, a powerful relic that can make time stand still. She has to make darn sure that the pieced-together Triangle thingamajiggy doesn't fall into the hands of the Illuminati, a secret society that plans to use it to control the world. Oh, and did we mention that this mission has to be executed while the 9 planets are in perfect alignment, a phenomenon that occurs every 5000 years? Yeah, well, it has to be...and Lara sure does look good fulfilling her task!
The Long Review:
If there's one thing that "Tomb Raider" has, it's adventure. Oh, yeah, and Angelina Jolie's mouth, too, but you already knew that. This screen adaptation of the smash video game has Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) going on an adventure that takes her from one end of the world to another, to locate the two pieces that make up the Triangle of Light, a powerful relic that can make time stand still. Now here's the challenge, as if finding the pieces weren't difficult enough: She has to stop a secret society called Illuminati from getting its hands on the Triangle because this group plans to use it to control the world. D-uh. Wouldn't you? Oh, and her mission to piece together the Triangle and destroy it has to be executed right when the 9 planets go in perfect alignment...something that happens, oh, every 5000 years.
"Tomb Raider" is a non-stop adventure that we have to admit, gets tedious at times. I mean, can't the hardships and impossible situations just end already?! Don't get us wrong. It's an interesting plot and all; it just dragged on at times. But hey, that's just us. We have to admit, though, this movie is an amazing production. It has some awesome stunts, impressive special effects, and breathtaking scenery. And that Angelina Jolie! Whew! Is she a hot mama or what? We can't think of a better actress to play the role. Sure, her English accent could use a little work but after seeing her shower scenes and the way her lithe body bends and stretches to perform her stunts, I'm sure it won't matter to you people. This woman has such a strong screen presence that even though you may want to close your eyes and give your overloaded senses a break (as we did), you just can't tear your eyes off of the screen. Oh, and the other people in the cast did alright, too. Hehehe.
And what does Roger Ebert have to say about the subject? "'Lara Croft Tomb Raider' elevates goofiness to an art form. Here is a movie so monumentally silly, yet so wondrous to look at, that only a churl could find fault." To which we say, what the hell's a churl?!
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- The actor who plays Angelina Jolie's father in this movie is her real-life Dad, Jon Voight. Hmmm...'wonder if she has the same um...intimate relationship with her das as she seems to have with her brother??
- Simon West, director of "Tomb Raider", also directed "Con Air" and "The General's Daughter".
- Among the actors rumoured to play Lara Croft were Elizabeth Hurley, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Demi More, and Sandra Bullock. Now aren't you glad they chose Angelina Jolie?
- Angelina handles knives quite a bit in this movie. 'Wonder if the knives she used belong in her personal collection??
