The Long Review:

Bedazzled is the perfect movie to see if you just want to see something pretty on the screen and chuckle once in a while. It stars Brendan Fraser as Elliot Richards, a loser with a capital L who doesn't have a chance in hell at getting it on with his dream girl, Alison (Frances O'Connor). And then one particularly humiliating night, he has an encounter with the Devil in a Red Dress (Elizabeth Hurley). Literally. Lucifer is actually Lucy! Anyhow, desperately seeking Alison, Elliot signs a contract with the devil stating that he'd trade in his soul for seven wishes that will bring Alison into his life.

Sound simple? Well, that's because it is. The plot of Bedazzled is what you may call harmless. It's easy on the brain (it doesn't require much thinking to get what's going on, the heart (no surprises that'll get your heart beating erratically)...and the eyes (Liz Hurley is hotter than hell...pun intended). The film is made up of one misadventure after the other for Elliot, courtesy of that naughty devil. You get laughs, but not many, watching Elliot fall flat on his face and hearing the devil's sexy cackle.

As for special effects, it's lacking...a lot. The closest Bedazzled comes to wowing the audience is the extent of the Devil's red wardrobe. Don't be surprised if somewhere in the middle, you begin to wonder whether you paid to see a movie or a fashion show. But then again, Elizabeth Hurley is a model. Which probably explains why she doesn't make a very scary devil. Brendan Fraser was quite a convincing loser, though...just like in every other movie he's made. So one may say his role in Bedazzled isn't too big a stretch for him.

Overall, Bedazzled is an okay movie. It's not good but it's not bad. It could be better if jokes were pushed just a bit further to get out of the safe (but not too funny) zone and if Liz Hurley played her part with a bit more gusto. As Roger Ebert says, "It is lacking in wickedness. It doesn't smack its lips when it's naughty." Hmmm...Is he talking about the movie or Elizabeth Hurley??

Did you know?

  • Liz Hurley was the perfect pick to play the irresistible Devil in this film. She was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history in 1995 .
  • Brendan Fraser has a right to brag himself. He was chosen by People Magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world in 1998. 'Guess if you're that beautiful, you won't have to sell your soul to score a date, huh?
