Pickup Line: Devilishly Fun!
Quickie: The new, sexier, funkier, and tougher recruits fight the bad guys to rescue a kidnapped software genius (Can we say Bill Gates?). If only all rescuers were this hot, men everywhere would be plotting their own kidnapping!
The Long Review:
Charlie's Angels is a movie that you're skeptical about seeing but even more skeptical about not seeing. It's one of those things that you just have to do against people's advise, kinda like puffing your first (and hopefully last!) cigarette, buying a car that'll put you in debt till the day you die and long after, or wearing very fashionable yet highly uncomfortable shoes to the prom. We're guessing that you get the point.
Starring Cameron Diaz (Natalie), Drew Barrymore (Dylan), and Lucy Liu (Alex), this movie installment of the '70s series has the new recruits rescuing the kidnapped genius gazillionaire behind Knox Electronics (Sam Rockwel), at the request of his friend and business partner, Vivian Wood (Kelly Lynch). Their main suspect is Roger Corwin (Tim Curry), Knox's main rival. So off the Angels go to display some major girl power, kick some serious ass, and make Charlie proud.
Is the movie entertaining? Very much so. Is it intelligently made? Very much no. Going into this movie, you really have to leave your common sense at home so you can truly appreciate the impossible stunts they pull off. Many a time, Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu come out of brutal, even deadly, situations unscathed, unscarred, and unfazed…even unclothed (What a treat, huh?). The plot has just about as many loops and holes as there are scandals surrounding the film. But like we said, if you can forgive those, then you can sit back and enjoy (literally) the movie.
And what's there to enjoy? Well, there's the so-cheesy-you-just-gotta-laugh dialogue. There's the sizzling hot trio of Angels flying about in illegally sexy clothing. There are the fantastically and colourfully choreographed fight scenes. And there's the infamous scene wherein Diaz dancing around, shaking her Spiderman underwear-clad booty.
Obviously, Charlie's Angels was made to entertain, not to pick your brain. Roger Ebert describes it as "…eye candy for the blind. It's a movie without a brain in its three pretty little heads, which belong to Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu." If you don't see this film for the pure enjoyment factor, then you're totally missing the point. It's made to arouse, tease, and tickle, all the while promoting girl power. This movie's a walking feminist debate but we simply won't go there. We will, however, recommend that you see this movie if you're in the mood for something light and sexy. Or you could just skip the movie and buy some lacy underwear. That could work, too.
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- This film became famous just as much for its stars as for the rumours surrounding it. Check out our article on the scandals behind Charlie's Angels.
- There's a token in the movie that testifies that Drew Barrymore is all grown up. In the scene wherein a naked Dylan seeks the help of two boys playing video games, there's an E.T. poster hanging in the room.
- There's no denying that Cameron Diaz is one heavenly hottie. She was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history in 1995 and was chosen by People Magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world in 1998.
- Lucy Liu's pretty qualified to play the role of a kick-ass Angel, we'd say, what with her experience with playing a tough-talking, ever-growling, heart breaking lawyer on Ally Mc Beal.
