Pickup Line: Hell Of A Lotta Laughs!

Quickie: When the Prince of Darkness' older sons defect and go to Earth, his youngest son, Little Nicky, tries to save Daddy-O and the Kingdom of Hell from extinction by going to Earth himself to try to get the evil duo back.

The Long Review:

Adam Sandlers' earned a reputation for making audiences laugh. He only half lives up to his repuation in his latest movie, "Little Nicky." In this comedy directed by Steven Brill, Sandler stars as the Devil's son whose mother also happens to be an angel, explaining why he's the wussiest demon to ever burn in the eternal flames of Hell. When the time comes for Daddy Devil (Harvey Keitel) to step down from his throne as Prince of Darkness, Little Nicky's two older brothers (Rhys Ifan and Tom 'Tiny' Lister Jr.) can't wait to take over the Evil Kingdom. But alas, Daddy-O chooses to keep his throne and in strong defiance, the two brothers escape from Hell to rule on Earth instead. Their hasty exit from Hell freezes its gates, forbidding damned souls from entering into eternal damnation. Off to Earth Little Nicky goes to bring the evil duo back and to unleash his own evil. Harty-har-har!

Out of all of Adam Sandler's movies, "Little Nicky" has got to be the the unfunniest. Aside from a couple of half-hearted laughs, nothing else will come out of you except for an occasional sigh or yawn. Or maybe even a grunt of pain or a burst of gas. Were we disappointed? Yeah. The previews looked promising enough. But the movie sure didn't deliver. The plot, although simple, left a lot of room for Sandler's hilarious antics but unfortunately, the writers chose to fill the space with corny-ass slapstick jokes and hefty servings of thick, stinky cheese. We weren't impressed. Heck, even Sandler's hideous smirk and terrible posture, which should have elicited hearty guffaws, proved pathetic and irritating after a while. What the hell went down, Sandler?!

In the spirit of fairness and squareness, we did find it in our hearts and consciences to find a redeeming factor in this godawful movie. Reese Witherspoon. As Little Nicky's foxy angel of a mom, she was the perfect mix of sweetness, sexiness, and ditziness. Was she cute or what?! Shorty Ryan Philippe should be proud.

But not Adam Sandler. Just like his character, Little Nicky, he should bow his head and back in shame for what he has done and what he has failed to do. This funny man just wasn't funny! We laughed more at his sidekick dog than we did at him. Roger Ebert has this to say about Sandler's performance: "...Sandler, at the center, is a distraction; he steals scenes, and we want him to give them back." We disagree. Sandler didn't steal any scenes; if he did at all, then maybe this movie wouldn't be a complete write-off. Unlike his other movies, "Little Nicky" doesn't scream SANDLER. No, he didn't steal any scenes; if anything, perhaps somebody stole his talent during the making of this movie. If "Little Nicky" is any indication of what audiences can expect from Adam Sandler in the future, then it is safe to say that his work has gone to hell Sigh. Where have the good times gone??

Did you know?

  • "Little Nicky" has proven to be a demon of a disappointment at the box office. It's just not making the projected earnings its producers were expecting. Gee, maybe if it was um...funny, it would be making more money.
  • Most of Sandler's leading ladies in his films have names that begin with the letter V: Valerie, Vicky Veronica, Virginia...Hmmm...
