Pickup Line: Simply Delightful!
Quickie: The residents of Whoville have quite an interesting Christmas when the Grinch comes down from his very own mountain to wish them a very Merry Christams. Mwahahaahaha!!
The Long Review:
Well, Jim Carrey's done it again. He stars in "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas" as the infamous Mr. Grinch. And boy, does he play the hairy, growly, bitter beast well! This movie, in a word, is delightful. Ron Howard stays true to his trademark artistry and delivers a remarkable Christmas winter wonderland that simply makes one's eyes bug out. If this movie doesn't get you in the mood for the holidays, then you're a Grinch! Hee-hee!
In this Christmas tale, the Grinch, who lives atop a garbage mountain overlooking the Christmas-loving town of Whoville, gets so fed up with the idea of Christmas that he descends from his stinky perch to visit Whoville, just for the sole purpose of ruining Christmas cheer. Enter the story of Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), a sweet little girl who's lost the Christmas spirit herself. And how does she seek to get it back? By trying to get the Grinch involved (and liking!!) all the Christmas festivities. Let the fun begin!!
This movie, amidst all of its fantastical elements, has a dramatic side, if you can believe it. It successfully explains why the Grinch became well, a grinch. In a way, it gives the children who go to see it some credit; it takes into consideration that kids are intelligent enough to grasp concepts beyond Pokemon and Barbie dolls. Sure, kids can laugh, smile, and giggle at Jim Carrey's infamous antics but they are also sure to take note of the life lessons that the Grinch's story has to offer. And the parents will love that, we're sure!
Overall, this is a feel-good, see-good movie that offers warmth for the heart and candy for the eyes. The set design is simply amazing and it also has some pretty decent special effects. It's a film that both kids and adults can enjoy. Except for Roger Ebert. The ol' guy simply didn't appreciate it. He said, "I think a lot of children are going to look at this movie with perplexity and distaste. It's just not much fun." Which pretty much goes against everything we've said about the movie. Poor Mr. Ebert. 'Guess The Grinch does exist, after all.
In Two Minutes:
Did you know?
- Jim Carrey claims to have been in so much pain throughout filming. His Grinch nose and Grinch eyes were plain torture. Well, look in the bright side, Jim. The pain probably helped you portray the role of bitter hairy creature more convincingly...and hey, you got paid $20 million!!! For that kind of money, we little people would stick glass in our eyes!!!
- This is Taylor Momsen's second movie. We predict that with her cute button nose, endearing singing voice, and incredible maturity, we'll be seeing a lot more of her.
